The art of anticipation

Ask most people what improved their sex life and they'll name a thing: a toy, a position, a bottle of something. Ask again a year later and the honest answer is almost always the same — they got better at the build-up. Anticipation is the cheapest, least-discussed upgrade there is, and it works whether you own a drawer full of toys or nothing at all.

01Desire is built before anything is touched

Arousal isn't a switch you flip when clothes come off. It's a slope, and most of the climb happens in your head hours earlier — a message at lunchtime, a plan you both know about, the deliberate decision that tonight is for this and not for the washing up. Toys work far better on someone who has been thinking about it all afternoon.

02Four ways to stretch the build-up

  • ◆Name the night. A plan you both know about turns an ordinary Thursday into something you're looking forward to from breakfast.
  • ◆Send one message, not twenty. Something specific you'd like to do, sent early enough that it sits there all day.
  • ◆Delay on purpose. Agree that nothing happens for the first twenty minutes, whatever either of you wants. Frustration is the point.
  • ◆Change the setting. A different room, the lights actually off, phones in a drawer. Novelty does a lot of the work.

03Where a toy fits in

A toy is best used as punctuation, not as the opening sentence. Introduce it once things are already going well and it adds a new sensation to an existing state of arousal. Lead with it cold and it often feels clinical — which is where the "we tried it once and it lived in the drawer" story comes from.

If you're bringing something new in with a partner, say so beforehand. That conversation is itself part of the build-up, and it removes the one thing that genuinely kills the mood: surprise nobody asked for.

04Why unboxing something works

There's a practical reason we sell boxes rather than single items. Not knowing exactly what's inside, opening it together, and finding out in the moment is anticipation in physical form — the waiting, the reveal, then the trying. It gives an ordinary evening a shape it wouldn't otherwise have.

If you'd rather choose everything yourself, that's a perfectly good call — you can build your own box instead. Just don't open it the second it lands on the mat.
