10 date night ideas for couples

Date night dies the moment it becomes "shall we just get a takeaway again?" These ten ideas take barely any planning, most cost nothing, and a few of them will keep you both up rather later than intended. Pick one, put the phones in a drawer, and commit to it.

Want the surprise built in? Our complete guide to sex toy mystery boxes explains how they work.

1.The blind menu dinner

One of you cooks or orders, the other has no idea what's coming. Three small courses beats one big one — it stretches the evening and gives you something to talk about between each plate.

  • ◆Set the table properly, even if it's beans on toast. Effort is the whole point.
  • ◆No phones on the table — the first person to reach for one does the washing up.
  • ◆Finish with something you eat with your hands. It changes the mood entirely.

2.The two-hour rule: no screens

A ludicrously simple one that works. Two hours, no TV, no scrolling. Talk, play cards, give each other a shoulder rub. Most couples discover they haven't had a proper uninterrupted conversation in weeks.

3.Recreate your first date

Same pub, same terrible film, same drinks order. Nostalgia is a shortcut to feeling like you fancy each other again — and you'll both remember details the other has completely forgotten.

4.The question jar

Each of you writes ten questions you've never asked the other — anything from "what's the best holiday you've ever had?" to things far less printable. Fold them up, pick one at a time, answer honestly. It escalates on its own.

5.The at-home spa night

Hot shower, warm towels, dim the lights, and take turns giving a proper massage — not a thirty-second shoulder squeeze. Use a body-safe massage oil or a decent lotion, and swap over only when the first person says so.

  • ◆Warm the oil in your hands first. Cold oil ruins the mood in one second flat.
  • ◆Purpose-made low-temperature massage candles only — never household candles.
  • ◆Phones off, one playlist, no talking for the first ten minutes.

6.The cheap night out: pick a number

Get on a bus and get off at a stop you've never used. Walk until you find somewhere to eat. It costs the price of two fares and a meal, and it's the closest thing to an adventure you can have on a Tuesday.

7.Learn something badly, together

Cocktail making, salsa off YouTube, pottery, a language you'll never speak. Being equally rubbish at something is a surprisingly strong bonding exercise — and laughing at each other is underrated foreplay.

8.The dares jar (grown-up edition)

Ten dares each, written on slips of paper, from silly to filthy. Draw one a night. Vetoes are always allowed, sulking about a veto isn't. Agree beforehand what's off the table and pick a word that means stop immediately.

9.The hotel night (or the spare room)

A night somewhere that isn't your bedroom resets everything — no laundry pile, no school run in the morning. Can't stretch to a hotel? Move to the spare room, change the sheets, and treat it like a different place entirely.

10.The mystery box night

Our favourite, and we're not pretending to be neutral. You order a box, you don't peek, and you open it together on the night — one item at a time, building the evening around whatever comes out. The not-knowing does half the work for you.

  • ◆Open it together — one of you opening it early ruins the entire point.
  • ◆One item at a time, with a drink between each. Don't tip it out on the bed.
  • ◆Arrives in plain, unbranded packaging, so nobody at the door has a clue.
