Date Night
Date night was getting boring.
So we stopped planning it.

Friday used to mean the same thing every week. The same takeaway menu on the fridge. The same corner of the sofa. The same twenty minutes deciding what to watch, followed by falling asleep halfway through it.
Nobody was unhappy. That was almost the problem. It was comfortable, and comfortable had quietly turned into automatic.
So they made one rule for their next night together: neither of them was allowed to know exactly what was coming.
One of them booked the table. The other chose what happened after. No hints, no group chat, no checking reviews in advance. Just a time, an address and a promise to turn up dressed for it.
The strange thing was how early it started. The night didn't begin at eight o'clock — it began on Tuesday, with a text that just said "Friday. Don't make plans." It carried on through the week in small, stupid ways: a raised eyebrow over breakfast, a question that went unanswered, a parcel that arrived and was put straight in the wardrobe.
By Friday, the anticipation had done most of the work.
They won't tell us everything that happened next — and honestly, that's fair. But they did tell us this: the best part wasn't any single thing they did. It was the feeling of not knowing, and choosing to enjoy it.
If your evenings have started to feel like reruns, you don't need a grand gesture. You just need one rule, and the nerve to stick to it.
